March 19th

Hello,
For Tuesday March 19th read Chapter 8-Planning Units, Lessons, and Activities. Read pages 269-286. After your reading answer the following questions in the comment section below:
1)Define and explain what developing teachers knowledge and goals are in unit planning.
2) What does planning the unit look like? Give examples and explanations from the book.
Come to class prepared to discuss the reading.
Your responses should be 1-2 paragraphs each and are due by 12:55pm on March 19th.

  1. 1)Define and explain what developing teachers knowledge and goals are in unit planning.
    • Social studies planning ask teachers to be four planners at once: a curriculum planner, and assessment planner, an activity planner, and a resource planner. Of course the goal is to be knowledgeable of the content in the areas of history, geography, economics, law and government, as well as other social sciences such as psychology, sociology, and anthropology.
    o Curriculum Planning: What social studies knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values are essential?
    o Assessment Planning: What evidence will assure us that the essentials have been learned?
    o Activity Planning: What activities will engage my students, both hands on and minds on and minds on, for a sustained period of time?
    o Resource Planning: What resources do I need, what resources will students need, where are they and how do I get them?


    2) What does planning the unit look like? Give examples and explanations from the book.
    Come to class prepared to discuss the reading.
    • A unit should cover between three to eight weeks of an ongoing topic. There are three essential components of planning a unit lesson plan.
    o Study the curriculum guide and talk about it with colleagues.
     Grade 5: American History
    • The Native Americans: Culture
    o Frame learning objectives (determine desired results of study)
     Learning objectives are narrower and more focused than learning goals.
    • Skills: Democratic participation, study and inquiry, intellectual
    • Virtues: Democratic virtues (respect and responsibility)
    o Determine assessment
     Summative: assessed after the unit is taught (state assessment).
     Formative: on-going assessment while the unit is being taught (quiz, essay).

  2. 1. Teacher knowledge is what teachers need to know about the topic they are going to be teacher. Without knowledge of the subject the students are going to not get all the information they need to better now the topic. The more teachers know about a subject the more in depth they can teach the information.
    Goals are the overall learning you want your students to know. Goals are also the objectives or standards we want our students to achieve.
    2. A unit plan is a plan that covers three to eight weeks of information about a topic the teacher picks. The unit consists of lessons, activities, resources, and assessments.
