Thursday Feb. 14th

Take a look at page 161 question #4, look at the 2 lesson plans that were displayed in chapter 4, then think about how the teacher would differentiate instruction in both of the lessons. Write your explanations below. This is a great activity to really take a look at how lesson plans are constructed in the Social Studies area. Please take your time and think about how you would differentiate instruction for both of the lessons. Your resonse will be due by 12:55 pm on Feb. 14th.

  1. With the lesson plan number 4 I would have children I believe that may have trouble with this assignment work with a partner. Whether that partner be a student, aid, or parent. I would make sure the student would be able to handle being startled. I would also work with the student and see if I would be able to access their prior knowledge and give them insight on the vocab in a simplified form. The students would be given every opportunity to complete the objective with the class but also so that they are able to comprehend what is being taught.
For lesson plan five I would simplify the students worksheets and simplify their vocab. The students do need to be involved with the class but I would also give them extra help as in partners or me myself working with the student. I would present the student with some visual aids of what we re discussing to help the student such as a outline of what is going to be taught so the child does not get distracted and fall behind.

  2. Lesson 4
A lot of ideas came to my head after reading the lesson plan. First I would explain what primary and secondary sources were, for example primary is first hand information and secondary is second hand. I will also give some examples of each source, and have students brainstorm some ideas. I must make sure they know the difference before I can more on to more information. I may have students get into partners and look up the definition and then have students put the meaning in their own words and share. Graphic organizers or diagrams are also good ways to get students motivated. I could also work through a scenario with them and think out loud the procedure, to give them a good idea of how the event can look.
    Lesson 5
I would inform students the importance of teamwork and ask them to brainstorm some good and bad teamwork skills. I may also show a video of people working well together and then show them a video with not so good team work skills. I would explain that everyone has a job to do when they are part of a team and they are equally important. I may ask the students questions about who all works in the school and tell them that their job contributes to the an efficient running school. Another good idea is to go over the vocabulary words before the lesson starts. I would inform students that they already have a lot of good quality team work skills at their age.

  3. For lesson plan 4, what I would modify in this lesson is first review prior lessons and putting more focus on primary and secondary sources and highlighting the word interpret and conflicting to ensure they have a better understanding of what is expected at the end of this lesson. In addition I would also include "I can,..." statements. Another activity for auditory learners could possibly be having the students partner up and tell what they know about a subject or a topic and explaining and asking them, "Is what you told your partner a primary or secondary source? and Why?"

For lesson plan 5, under the "Interest Building" I like the activity of relating the lesson with experience of distributing an apple to each student. Again, I would make sure to relate the activity to their environment for a better understanding of "Division of Labor." Also for kinesthetic learners, I most likely plan a field trip to a production and/or distribution company and possibly show videos for a better understanding.
